SHUT YOUR EYES AND VOGUE! + 3 BONUS TRACKS + MADONNA SPEECH

MADONNA’s performances at the MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS, both in the United States as in Europe, are usually amazing... unique in everyway.

In 1990 MADONNA performed VOGUE in a very extraordinary way… you probably know what I’m talking about… it’s the one featuring MADONNA and her dancers and backing vocals dressed in an 18th-century French theme, with MADONNA bearing great resemblance to MARIE ANTOINETTE.
This video can easily be found on YOUTUBE, all you got do is to type on the search engine the keywords: MADONNA VOGUE MTV AWARDS.



This legendary performance of VOGUE at the MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS took place at the UNIVERSAL AMPHITHEATRE in Los Angeles on September 6, 1990.
What few fans know is that this was not the only occasion where MADONNA used the famous MARIE ANTOINETTE-inspired look to perform VOGUE.

On September 7, just one day after her performance at the VMAs, MADONNA was honored with the COMMITMENT TO LIFE AWARD and performed, again, VOGUE, at the COMMITMENT TO LIFE IV benefit for AIDS PROJEC LOS ANGELES (APLA) at the WILTERN THEATRE, Los Angeles, California.
APLA is dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by HIV disease; reducing the incidence of HIV infection; and advocating for fair and effective HIV-related public policy.
And you know what? MADONNA performed VOGUE in the same way she performed at the MTV AWARDS, I mean, she, her backing vocals and dancers were dressed in an 18th-century French again!

Unfortunately I never knew if the event was filmed... it probably was, but the video for this performance of VOGUE at the COMMITMENT TO LIFE IV has never been officially released, at least I never heard about it... I hope someday I can watch it... maybe someday...

Note that the portal from where MADONNA and the backing vocals come in very beginning of the song is quite different from that one shown at the VMAs that happened in the night before... the portal was painted in the curtain that is suspended and which serves as a stage background.

The second one is my SNOW PATROL favorite one, a song called OPEN YOUR EYES (you probably know the video for this song, it’s that one where a camera is attached on a motorcycle showing a high speed drive through Paris. This should be the end of my post, but first I would like to share with you something really beautiful.
I always enjoyed MADONNA’s speeches, I think they are emphatic and go straight to the point, good examples are ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME speech in 2008 and text-letter addressed to the Pope, the Vatican and the Catholic Italians that was read at the airport of Italy in 1990 when MADONNA was in that country with her BLOND AMBITION WORLD TOUR.
But my favorite speech is down below, the text was extracted from a publication of LOS ANGELES TIMES newspaper. This article was written by JEANNINE STEIN and it was published on September 10, 1990.
It brings an overview about the COMMITMENT TO LIFE IV and also the text that MADONNA read during the event promoted by APLA... it’s short, concise and goes straight to your mind and soul.

“I’m very honored to receive this award. In the back of my mind I feel that I don’t really deserve it... It’s very easy to lend your name to a celebrity fund-raiser if you’re famous, and it’s very easy to donate money to AIDS research if you’re reach. What isn’t easy is changing the way people think. While the AIDS epidemic is wreaking havoc on this planet, it’s also released a wave of homophobia that is truly frightening… It takes a lot of courage these days to come out and say “I’m gay”, but it takes a warrior to come out and say “I have AIDS”.
These are the people who deserve awards much more than me. So to the handful of people who I have known and loved dearly who have died of AIDS, to the thousands I have heard about and to the millions I will never know, I share this award with you. You are my heroes.”
